The
World of Gecko Art Studio
The name “Gecko Art Studio” was chosen because the Native American totem sign, the gecko, represents dreams. Steven Spitzer’s work often contains unusual forms, combinations, styles, or techniques. An example of one such technique is dropping a piece into the trash can, “on purpose,” the result of which (The Battered Queen) can be seen in the Spring 2008 album and to the right. Steven has explored several directions in his work, and will continue to both develop several of these directions and seek out new ones in the years to come. Some of the more unusual directions include the utilization of broken glass, melted in the kiln, for decorative purposes; mixed media ceramic sculptures, such as the award winning Majestic (Spring 2008, photo on left); and multiple-piece combinations such as The Battered Queen (photo on right). Examples of planned experimentation include horizontal and asymmetrical multiple-piece combinations, abstracted figures made of combined thrown forms, the utilization of different clay bodies, and hand-built extensions of thrown forms. Gecko Art Studio’s ultimate goal is to be a self-sustaining business, both selling pottery and offering beginning pottery courses. In pottery courses, the plan is to offer both hand-building and wheel-throwing, on either a private or small group basis. Steven owns a small kiln and has a wheel of his own, and has plans to build a small raku kiln in the near future. While currently the website is dedicated almost entirely to his ceramic work, in time other media and artists will be added to the studio and featured here. |
